Why don’t you ever buy me presents?” pleaded Lamech’s wife. ”You would if you really loved me.” Lamech’s other wife said the same thing and even added, “Where’s the romance?”
Women are crazy—pure and simple. Hadn’t Lamech composed for his wives the most beautiful love song?
Genesis 4:23-24: “Then Lamech composed these words for his wives Adah and Zillah:“Hear my voice, you wives of Lamech; give ear to my saying: A man I have killed for wounding me, yes, a young man for striking me. If seven times Cain is to be avenged, then Lamech seventy-seven times.”
There! It probably flows even more beautifully in the original Hebrew. The poor unappreciated man! Some women you just can’t satisfy! Just an old-fashioned love song; one I’m sure they wrote for you and me” crooned Three Dog Night. To be sure, Lamech’s love song is more on the order of the Marvelette’s Don’t Mess With Bill.
It reminds me of the tenderhearted farmer of a century past who took himself a new bride. As he was taking her home in his cart, the horse stumbled, jostling them both. “That’s one!” the fellow said.
Soon after the horse plodded under the low hanging branches, one of which slapped the farmer in the face. “That’s two!” he said.
A few hundred yards later the horse passed through a puddle and the farmer was splashed. “That’s three!” He stopped the cart, got down and shot the horse dead.
”What did you did that for?” cried his bride.
“That’s one!” he told her. What choice did he have? Some women just don’t understand romance. And they complain all the time.
….Edit: Huh! I thought Lamech, composer of that rough song of Genesis 4:23-24, was a lout. Turns out that he is one of the good guys.
